Smokie Blues Festival 2009

The 6th Smokie Blues Festivalhttp://www.smokieblues.com will take place over the weekend of 14th – 16th August 2009 at the Carnoustie Golf Hotel, Carnoustie, Scotland.

This is the first package deal festival of this type in Scotland with weekend tickets available with or without accommodation and separate tickets for each day of the event. The Smokie Blues festival presents an excellent opportunity to see a very high standard of international artists in the one venue on two stages over one weekend.

The programme for Friday includes Nina Van Horne who makes a rare UK appearance. Born in France and raised mostly in Texas, Nina is one of the most remarkable contemporary blues artists with a voice somewhere between Janis Joplin and Bette Midler and often referred to as the feminine Bob Seger. She was introduced to the blues by Dan Akroyd. Original Savoy Brown member, John O’Leary once described as the best harp player since Sonny Boy Williamson by Champion Dupree will make also make welcome appearance with his band on the Friday night.

Saturday’s headliners are the British Blues All Stars. The band were formed by Bob Hall in 2004 with a floating line-up of veteran British blues stars and along side Hall will be Bob Tench (formerly of Jeff Beck Group and Humble Pie), Tom McGuiness and Rob Townsend (from The Blues Band) and Mick Clark (Alan Price Band). One of Britain’s finest current blues band The Stumble will grace the main stage with their exciting live performance on Saturday as will festival favourites the Nimmo Brothers.

The highlight of Sunday’s impressive list of acts is British blues singer and guitarist Ian Siegal who has been described by Jeff Beck as the closest thing he has heard to Chester Burnett and has received critical acclaim for his albums “Meat & Potatoes and Swagger”. Also featuring on Sunday is American delta blues and National steel guitar player Kent DuChaine.

The festival line up will also feature other international acts include Blues and Roots Acoustic Musician Lil Ian Goodsman from New Zealand, Australian dobro blues guitar specialist Gypsy Dave Smith, The Flaming Strat Men from Germany, hard touring electric Dutch band The Road Dawgz and Norwegian blues rockers Dr Bendix. This is balanced by exciting home-grown acts such promising new Essex based Hokie Joint, alt blues guitarist Dave Arcari, and English blues & rock virtuoso Paul Rose. Perth based six piece Wang Dang Delta, 1950s style group The Revolutionaire and blues, rock n’ roll and swing combo Wolftrain will also feature.

The festival presents a superb opportunity to see some local and international blues artists in the fabulous setting of this four star golf hotel on the east coast of Scotland. Weekend and day tickets are current available, but are in limited supply so early booking is recommended.
